Welcome to Optimism

helping kids in Cambodia

Lucy and school

Lucy Crook, ex of W+K writes:

I decided to leave London in September after two and a half wonderful years at W+K to go and see a bit of the world. After five bonkers months in India, Mat and I ended up living in a wooden house on stilts in a rural Cambodian village, teaching English at the local primary school with a brilliant little charity called ABOUTAsia Schools.

They are a small charity making a massive difference to the lives of over 50,000 kids in Cambodia, so we wanted to try and help raise a bit of awareness for them and maybe some donations to help the local schools they support. We came up with the idea of challenging our primary school class (who were just mastering ‘yoyo’, ‘kite’ and ‘ball’) to learn the ‘hardest word in English’ and captured it all on video. I’m afraid no kittens feature, but it is probably the cutest thing you’ll watch today.

We’re trying to get as many people to see it as possible (we promised the kids people all over the world would see them…) so if you like it, it would be great if you could help us share it on blogs, facebook, twitter (#supercalifragilisticexpialidocious @aboutasiaschools). The more people that see it, hopefully the more we can raise to support these kids in school.

For extra Good Karma Points today, you could donate as little as $5 (that’s equivalent to £3) which is enough to buy a uniform for a kid to attend school. They are a registered charity and you can donate with your credit card, securely through paypal here.

This project has been about as DIY as it gets. We spent 5 hours in a 40 degree classroom chalking up the stop motion titles on the blackboard, made a tripod out of a stack of textbooks and had the kids shouting ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ Some friends at The Viral Factory kindly offered to help us with the edit and we think it’s turned out into a sweet little film. Hope you enjoyed it.

Colette packed in our reception a while back to focus on her music. It seems to be going OK.  Last night she played in Rough Trade around the corner on Dray Walk.

Here's what Rough Trade had to say about them:

2:54  AT ROUGH TRADE EAST

Over the past year 2:54 -sister duo Colette and Hannah Thurlow – have established themselves as one of 2012's most important breakthrough UK bands. With the announcement of their eponymous debut album they're preparing to unveil the writing and recording work that's occupied much of their time since the band's inception, and fans of their unique and enveloping sound should prepare to have their expectations obliterated.
