Welcome to Optimism

Two fish and an elephant

Genre-blending Texas funk Trio Khruangbin released a new video for ‘Two Fish And An Elephant’, from their debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’.

Laura Lee, a former W+Ker plays bass in the band, and Scott Dungate, a Khruangbin fan and also her former boss at W+K, made his directorial debut with this music video. The video was able to come about through a collaboration between Somesuch and W+K, with support from The Mill, Trim and Factory.

Khruangbin has always drawn inspiration from music and cinema, and it’s always been an ambition of theirs to one day score a film. To make this happen, they teamed up with Scott, CD at W+K London. He was so taken by the band’s song ‘Two Fish And An Elephant’ that he concepted an idea to bring it to life as a short film. The song itself is the story of a long goodbye, but ‘Two Fish’ is also a story about realising a creative vision in reverse — creating a film for a pre-existing score. After successfully raising funding on Kickstarter and with the help of Somesuch, the Mill, Trim and Factory to make it happen, the team shot the film in London.

Scott says

I’ve always found the music of Khruangbin very cinematic, as if lifted from a film score. Working with the band, I really enjoyed working out a visual narrative to fit the highs and lows of the song. It’s a beautiful song but it’s also more complex than that. I wanted a story that also acknowledged the tracks moments of haunting and melancholy. That’s how we came up with this idea of a break-up, moving on and one last dance. While it was the first film I’ve directed, I was fortunate to be surrounded by some great people who were generous and patient with their time and talent.

We wanted to explore a story that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, pulling references from Tarantino & Miyazaki. Having known Scott and his work for years, we knew he’d make our song come to life the way it did. It was an honour and total pleasure collaborating with him.

Khruangbin is touring in the UK and Europe in October.

Stay strong with Arla Protein

We’ve got our autumn exercise plans licked here at W+K. We’re taking inspiration from our first TV work for Arla Protein: strengthening our core by maintaining a plank pose whilst being licked, pawed and generally bothered by a pesky canine.
The spot, directed by The Bobbsey Twins from Homicide was shot in our back garden AKA Victoria Park and goes live on Monday 3rd October.
Arla Protein is faff-free protein for everyone and our ‘stay strong’ campaign has always aimed to puncture the bombastic and somewhat agressive tonality of other brands in the fitness sector. This film is no exception and takes inspiration the OOH executions we’ve produced for the brand since January 2015.

We’ve also cut a cheeky YouTube version designed to highlight the dangers of ‘skipping’ the things in life that challenge us. The viewer’s reward, as well as getting an eyeful of the full Arla Protein range, is more time with Kiva, the well-trained mutt who steals the show in both films.

Stay strong out there.
