Welcome to Optimism

Chesters’ Adventures at TED – Day 1

Day one at TED2010 (well technically it is -1 because the real conference starts tomorrow).

Today was taken up with registration, catching up with some old faces and the first session of TED University – which still had some pretty amazing stuff going on.

Everything covered from how to create the perfect eco-home (Catherine Mohr) to the future of medicine through freaky singularity shit (Daniel Kraft) to biologic robotic weirdness (Kevin Stone) and some pretty cool stuff on creating and nurturing heroes (Phil Zimbardo). The rest of the highlights involved the future of running shoes (or not as he advocated) from Felix Kramer and the launch of Cindy Gallop’s new site: http://beta.ifwerantheworld.com

Tonight was taken up with a few beers with some old faces – Morgan Spurlock (of supersizeme fame) discussing recent Stoke City exploits, and the ‘Indiana Jones of Viruses’ Nathan Wolfe begging for a personal tour of my wife’s family's oyster farm.

Tomorrow is the start of TED2010 proper – cannot wait. Will send updates when I can.

Kev.

Bad news about Bob. Also: underbelly

Bob

Got back to my hotel room to find that my room-mate Bob was in a bad way. I don't know much about fish doctoring, but I know enough to conclude that floating motionless belly-up on the surface of the water is a bad sign. I had hoped to ask Bob for his recommendations on local restaurants but he had nothing to say. So we just went out for sushi. Which is, I think, how he would have wanted it.

Our cab driver on the way home told us this was his first ever night driving a cab and we were his third fare. He said that he enjoyed the job because it gave him the opportunity to see 'the underbelly of human life'. Those first two fares must have been something special; Colman and I kept our underbellies well covered.
