Welcome to Optimism

wk side – transmission week 8

Last week we were mainly been brainstorming, mocking and generally whittling down ideas, plus many an out and about interview, documentation and thematic exploration.

The W+K office has been very supportive thus far, tough love with a big dollop of good ole fashioned high jinks a-plenty. Music has been provided by Guy and Beany leaning towards a folk b-boy breaker mix with Barry White undertones. The Xmas party talent show looms and unsung performance heroes dust off their Elvis suits and discard all the brown M&Ms. Your faithful Siders remain dubious as to their specialty but no doubt will be coaxed out into the hot wieden spotlight and forced to uncover what lies beneath our recently spotty skins. Big up to all the crew. x

b3ta visit

Rob Manuel, one of the blokes who set up b3ta.com

came in to wieden + kennedy today to give a talk about the history of his site. We thought it might be interesting to hear about web design from someone who isn’t really a web designer.

It was a funny talk and fascinating to hear how daft jokes thought up in the pub have turned into a site that generates all sorts of extremely popular viral content. It’s a great demonstration of the power of the Net to turn odd little ideas into things that can influence mainstream culture.http://www.b3ta.com/features/phalliclogoawards/

The stuff on the site is self confessedly stupid and non-pc – see the phallic logo awards

– but it’s often very funny, gets passed round  quickly and often gets ripped off by the newspapers. You might have seen some of his quizzes too – http://www2.b3ta.com/gruesometwosomes/.
