Welcome to Optimism

Hifana live in london

We hosted the London debut of WKTokyo Lab recording artists Hifana tonight. WKTLab is the recording label run by Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo which showcases cutting edge musical and visual artists. Hifana is a breakbeat duo who mix and sample sound and vision live.

First of all, Bruce Ikeda, who runs the label, gave us a presentation about their goals and their artists. They’ve release eight albums so far, by performers including Hifana, Afra and Takagi Masakatsu.

Then we went down to 93 Feet East in Brick Lane to see Hifana perform live. They were brilliant. Loads of fun, energy and a real crossover mix-up sound of beats, ethnic sounds and crazy visuals. Not at all the studied cool you might expect from such an act. They, er,  rocked.

A bit like Cog (3)

Here’s an excerpt from the oft-cited movie by Fischli and Weiss ‘The way things go’. Unless you have access to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, you may have heard of it but not seen it. A reader mentioned it again in reference to one of the posts below so when I found this clip on Youtube I thought I’d put it up here. Judge for yourself how close it is to Wieden + Kennedy’s Cog film for Honda, and the other chain reaction films below.
