Welcome to Optimism

IPA invite

I received an invitation today to an event that made me angry, then sad.

The IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) is hosting an event with posh people’s restaurateur Jeremy King, the man behind expensive eateries for Soho media types The Ivy, The Wolseley, etc. He’s going to be having a chat with Moray MacLennan of M&C Saatchi. Is it just me or does this just confirm the suspicions of anyone who believed that the world of advertising is peopled by shallow wankers? I’m sure that Jeremy King is an entertaining speaker and a successful businessman but the association between ‘advertising’ and ‘swanky restaurants’ seems to me an unfortunate and unhelpful one. Are we really just in the client service business? I may have to change my life.

best press ad of 2006?

Our "St Wayne" ad for Nike (original concept shown above) scooped the "Winner of Winners" award for the UK’s best national newspaper ad of 2006 last night. We also won a further prize, for the same ad, in the category of best combination of media planning and buying. That award was shared with Mindshare.

Here are creative team Chris, Guy and Stu holding up their rather large winners’ cheque. The Milky Bars are on them.

This means that for 2006 we have been recognised for best TV ad (Impossible Dream at British Telly Awards) best poster ("St Wayne" at Campaign Posters) and best press ad. Nice hat-trick.
