Welcome to Optimism

fab fixed gear

From the
people that knock on our front door every day, wondering if we’re a
trendy east end shop, you could be forgiven for thinking that youth
culture’s gone a bit charity shop – it’s all used carrier bags, scruffy
shoes, and found tee-shirts.

The one exception seems to be bikes – expensive looking bespoke fixed wheel racers are everywhere (often with neon rims).

So it’s not that surprising that we have a new neighborhood bike shop.  “Shop 14”
have moved in across the road, and they  don’t sell anything with
gears.  They have an amazing selection of bikes, all hand made in
Coventry. The kit is inspiring stuff, with scary attention to detail –
we now know more about frame weld points than we could ever need.

Worth a look if you’re near Brick Lane.

Matt Stuart

This month we're lucky enough to have a series of photographs by the lovely Matt Stuart adorning our stairwell.

In his own words:

''I am not sure which came first, being nosey or an interest in ‘street photography’, but a fascination with people and the way they live their lives is why I enjoy the business so much.

I can’t hide behind lights and technology, I am reliant on a small Leica camera, patience and lots of optimism [right on, Matt]. But what I get in return is the chance to make an honest picture which people know immediately is a genuine moment and which hopefully burrows deep into their memories.''
