W+K L Gallery – Giving ‘Throw Away’ Photos a Second Look
This month our L Gallery features work by East London local Brett Gascoigne. Brett’s taken 'throw away' photos — those slightly awkward, glossy, overly posed prints — that come with new frames and reframed them in larger, simple black frames, drawing attention to the typically overlooked pictures.
Says Brett: “People always think of these as cheesy pics. But they’re actually all created by real models, stylists, photographers, retouchers and printers. So whatever you think of them, there’s been time, effort and craft involved in creating them.
“I’ve been looking for a place to exhibit. A fun agency like W+K seemed like the perfect place — somewhere that people would get it.
“I’ve also created a printed range of asterisks. In adverts you tend to make asterisks as small as possible to hide small print. I made mine 1,000 point. It’s amazing how different all the fonts all look.”
Brett has always liked art and is trained in sculpture, photography and painting. He currently works as a freelance Art Director.
